Although the Brazilian record industry has been centered in Rio de Janeiro and dominated by a few multinational companies since its beginnings in the early 20th century, it's been shaken up quite a bit in the last 25 years as distinct music scenes have formed in cities as far apart as São Paulo, Salvador, and Recife, and independent studios and labels have asserted themselves. Now there's more to Brazilian music than samba, bossa nova, and MPB, though those styles continue to inform new styles, as do funk, punk rock, hip-hop, acid jazz, dub, and EDM. This is the phenomenon presented in Urban Brazil, which features singles, remixes, and previously unreleased tracks by some of the most innovative Brazilian artists of the time.

El Palmas Music and El Dragón Criollo once again leave their skin immersing themselves in the musical archives of the "Venezuelan Saudi". In addition to the search for that Holy Grail of "one's own identity" in the midst of the international explosion of musical trends, the need arises to express the consequences that the urban explosion and unbridled growth had on society. Color de Trópico Vol. 2 confronts you with a new expressive rebellion, that of the new heterogeneity, the diversity of the new social organization and the struggle for survival. New styles raise their voices, in the face of all this urban complexity we already know that traditional genres, far from reacting passively, returned to the charge of cumbia, joropo, merengue coexisting against rock and roll, but this rock and roll opened the doors and it evolved with them in the form of rock (just), pop, soul, jazz, highly sophisticated funk. But, as you can see in Color de Trópico Vol. 2, the influence of Caribbean modernity also stomped on with new rhythms such as ska, rocksteady, reggae, originating in Jamaica and represented in Venezuela by the group of brilliant good vibes such as Las Cuatro Monedas and its theme "Buena Suerte".

Various – Son Cubano NYC (Cuban Roots New York Spices 1972-82) Afro-Cuban Jazz, Cubano, Son Music Album Compilation

Almost all of the afro-Cuban music in this compilation fell under the new marketing category ‘salsa’ (up till then it would have been simply called Latin music), and its cradle was New York City, where the tradition flourished amidst the constant mix of ethnicities and so many styles of music.

It was inevitable that afro-Cuban music would proliferate in new genres reflecting its new home. Afro-Cuban jazz was born in New York City, through the amalgamating creativity of musicians like Chano Pozo, Machito, Duke Ellington and Dizzy Gillespie. Likewise Boogaloo in the mid sixties, coming out of Harlem, joining Guajira and son with soul, R and B and doo-wop.

The recordings on Son Cubano NYC were made over the decade beginning 1972, for the new Salsoul and SAR labels and their sisters Mericana and Guajiro. For the trumpeter Chocolate, the music has ‘broader harmonies and touches of jazz phrasing, but never leaves the raices and cinquillo… Cuban music is natural - its essence is its raices [roots]’. For the singer Henry Fiol, ‘New York salsa is a hybrid. When Cuban music moved to New York it added another flavour.’

Various – Loma (A Soul Music Love Affair) (Volume Four: Sweeter Than Sweet Things) (1964-1968) Funk Music Compilation

From late 1964 until late 1968, Loma stood as the subsidiary of Warner Brothers Records aimed directly at the singles market. During it's four year lifespan, the label released over 100 singles and a handful of albums, the vast majority of which reflected the collective taste of the men that guided Loma and thereby the evolution of a distinctive artform: soul music. Viewed objectively, it would be incorrect to compare Loma to the other great R&B repositories of the mid-1960s. It was strictly an adjunct of a bigger label, a commercially-minded operation that threw product at the wall hoping for a hit to stick. But the choices made by those three main participants in charge of the Loma roster-Bob Krasnow, Russ Regan, and Jerry Ragovoy-have gone on to become cherished totems to legions of music aficionados around the globe, for whom chart statistics say little, while a simple 45 with a burnt yellow label can shake them to the very core. What was once regarded as failure has, in the years since, paradoxically become a story of soulful success. Last but not least, our unprecedented dig into the Loma Record vaults has thrown up a surfeit of soulful goodies for the final volume, many of which are previously unreleased.

Those broadcasting from the outer regions include the irresistible dreamy folk trio Joyce, Mauricio, and Nana; medieval sambista Jose Mauro; guerrilla space-rockers Binario; Mark Pritchard's sci-fi exotica Troubleman guise; and freaking out lady Aleuda. Having taken a leap of faith with some of Brazil's edgiest artists, the high quality production never falters on 24 mind blowing compositions spread over two genre straddling discs. Twisted soft psych and hard experimentalism from the further fringes of Brazil makes for a cinematic, dancing brew. The result is intoxicating.

Ende Vom Lied is a genre-spanning collection of punk, post-punk and avant-garde bands from the former East Germany, chronicling the work of free spirits pitted against government restraints and implied genre limitations. The underground scene in the German Democratic Republic was a hydra, a noisy mix of musicians, poets, painters, photographers, filmmakers, punks and freaks. In the immediate aftermath of the primal scream that was punk, music often bred with poetry or painting in short-lived liaisons or enduring collaborations to produce a new generation of bastard genres. With the lines blurring between forms, a search for new shapes began. Ende Vom Lied is a genre-spanning collection of punk, post-punk and avant-garde bands from the former East Germany, chronicling the work of free spirits pitted against government restraints and implied genre limitations. The underground scene in the German Democratic Republic was a hydra, a noisy mix of musicians, poets, painters, photographers, filmmakers, punks and freaks. In the immediate aftermath of the primal scream that was punk, music often bred with poetry or painting in short-lived liaisons or enduring collaborations to produce a new generation of bastard genres. With the lines blurring between forms, a search for new shapes began. Dancer and B3 Hammond player Leon Gardner moved from his Texas to Los Angeles sometime in the mid '60s. Soon after arriving he set up his own Igloo records.

While in LA, Gardner befriended arranger and pianist Arthur Monday, Monday had settled in LA with his friend and co-musician Gabe Fleming, and they shared arranging credits for a few of the igloo releases. Fleming was credited for 'Farm Song' while Monday was credited for 'Honest Song' on the flip. 'Igloo Records' ie Leon Gardner was credited as producer. In reality, it's likely that the three of them worked together on both sides of the record and others on the label. Leon also arranged and produced other bands on the label such as the deep soul classic by the Jhamels 'I've Cried' and Wallace Petty Combo's Petty Cash but never reached the success he had hoped for.

Firenze Sogna` is literally a journey of musical itineraries from the legendary Tuscany chief town between the mid-70s and the early eighties, curated by Giampiero Bigazzi, Bruno Casini and Ernesto De Pascale. Influential post-punk act and electronic producers all teamed up with local legends depicting almost 20 years of a constant evolution. It is not simply the Italian way to rock’n’roll, hereby three generations of artists facing the banks of Arno river forged a memorable artistic season. Stalwart ok kosmische psychedelia Sensation’s Fix altogether with EBM forerunners Neon, astonishing etno-world travelers Zeit (the Italian answer to late Popol Vuh ?) and electro pioneer Alexander Robotnick , no wave heroes Rinf and rock in opposition alumni Bella Band (Cramps Records). 23 tracks split between two lps, a revelation of sort.
